At Ferintosh and Mulbuie Primary Schools, the pupils from P1-7 have the opportunity to take part in 'Clover Time' on a Friday afternoon in line with Article 31 of the UNCRC: I have a right to rest, relax and play .
The activities the children take part in will have a specific skills focus which are taken from the meta-skills progression and the class teachers will be discussing this focus with the children each week.
"Meta-skills are innate, timeless, higher-order skills that create adaptive learners and promote success in whatever context the future brings." (Skills Development Scotland)
The skills are grouped under the headings:
Self- Management, Social Intelligence and Innovation
Each term, class teachers will ensure that a particular focus is placed on one skill from each heading to ensure that all pupils cover 3 skills per term, totalling 12 over the course of an academic session e.g.
Term 1: Focusing, Communicating and Curiosity
Term 2: Integrity, Feeling, Creativity
Term 3: Adapting, Collaborating, Sense Making
Term 4: Initiative, Leading, Critical Thinking
These skills will also be discussed in class during other lessons to ensure that pupils understand how they link to real-life and the wider world of work.
Each term is broken into a rotation of 4 different categories of activities and the pupils will have the opportunity to undertake the different categories at least twice per term.
From the example timetable below, the term has been broken into the following categories:
Construction, Team Games, Board/Card Games and Creativity
An example 4 week rotation (Opportunities to develop skills : indoors and outside) will look like below:
Week 1- Construction: Lego, Knex, Kapla, design challenge etc.
Week 2 - Team Games: Football, Rounders, Rugby, obstacle challenges etc.
Week 3 - Board/Card Games: variety of games, for example, chess, cards etc.
